Our Story
In August 1969 Doreen and Melvyn Evans saw Percy Vero Funeral Directors for sale in Atherstone – based 200 miles away from their home in Pembrokeshire, South Wales. It was to be a huge gamble for them, leaving all of their family and friends behind. After much deliberation they decided to accept the challenge and move to Grendon House on Long Street together with their five young children. Melvyn was a cabinet maker by trade and had made coffins for the Co-Op in South Wales, inspiring his interest in this line of business. The house was very run down needing a complete renovation and, for a while, they wondered whether they had made the right decision. Melvyn was conducting the funerals by day and renovating the house in his spare time. With Doreen’s caring and loving nature and Melvyn’s hard work they were a great team who over the years built up an outstanding reputation in the local community.
In 1979 Doreen and Melvyn expanded the business into Albert Road in Tamworth. Again the property was in poor repair, having previously been flats, but in Melvyn’s spare time, and with the help of their sons David and Nigel, they completely renovated the building and opened their second branch.
In 1996 Doreen and Melvyn retired and their sons David and Nigel took over ownership. Doreen relished her retirement but suffered ill health soon after retiring and passed away in 2005. In comparison, retirement was just not an option for Melvyn and he continued to work right up until he passed away in 2008.
In 2002 the Atherstone office moved from Nigel and his family’s home at Grendon House to Holmville House. The property had been Jerry Boyle’s dentist surgery and was located two doors down on Long Street.
David and Nigel acquired their third branch. W Smith & Sons Funeral Directors on Avenue Road, Nuneaton was established in Nuneaton town centre in 1851. The owner Ian Smith told David and Nigel that he was only willing to sell his long established business to another family business with the assurance that it would remain an independent family concern.
To date, M G Evans & Sons remains an independent, family run Funeral Directors. The third generation of the Evans family, David’s daughter Carly and Nigel’s three sons Matthew, George and Luke all work within the family business.
