What to do when a Death Occurs
We are here to support you
Our dedicated team of funeral arrangers are always on hand to guide you through the next steps and offer the support you need at this very difficult time. This page is designed to offer some basic information about what to do next.
When a death occurs at home you will need to contact the deceased’s Doctor or use the out of hours service so that the doctor can attend and confirm the death.
If the death occurs in a nursing home or hospice the staff at the home will contact the Doctor on your behalf.
Once the death has been confirmed a medical certificate will be issued. If an on-call Doctor has attended, out of normal surgery hours, the certificate may be available for collection from the surgery the next working day.
Once the Doctor has attended the Funeral Director can be contacted to take the deceased into their care.
When a death is unexpected the attending Doctor must contact the local Coroner, who will investigate the cause of death further. This may result in an examination to determine the exact cause of death. In these cases, the Coroner will delay the funeral until he/she has finished the investigation but will liaise directly with the next of kin keeping them up to date at all times.
When a death occurs in a hospital you will be advised when and where the medical certificate will be ready for collection.
